Welcome to the monthly eNewsletter from one of Northwestern's experts in resource, instruction and research issues that impact faculty.

Please join us for the Winter and Spring Quarter 2East: New Technology Series. Our first presentation is on Tuesday, January 28th, "Using Videoconferencing in your Teaching and Research" from noon to 1pm. Presentations will be held in Evanston and videoconferenced to Chicago.

Also, be sure to stop by 2East for AT's Open House: Tools for Distributed Learning at NU on Friday, January 31st, 1 - 5 pm. We will be showcasing recent faculty projects integrating online learning tools and materials. Try the systems yourself and discuss how you might best use them in your classroom. For more information or to register, please click Presentations. We look forward to seeing you.

Electronic Books for the Study of History: The History E-Book Project and Gutenberg-e

Two recent projects, both of which are funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, bring secondary materials to the desktops of anyone interested in reading about the past. The History E-Book Project, a joint program of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) and the Mellon Foundation, is one such venture; another is Gutenberg-e, sponsored by the American Historical Association and Columbia University Press.

Taking a Look at Videoconferencing at Northwestern
Modern videoconferencing technologies support many useful communication services between classrooms on Northwestern's campuses, among researchers at sites around the world, and with corporations and agencies far beyond Chicago. Best of all, the latest videoconferencing technologies are available for the NU community and usually operate for free over advanced networks, and the equipment is getting relatively cheap for you to acquire.

Digital Media Services
At Digital Media Services we regularly field questions concerning digital video and methods delivering it. We thought we'd provide some answers in this article to a common question and additional information.
