New Technology Series: Upcoming Faculty Presentations Getting to Know 2East: Rochelle S. Elstein Archives |
Published every two weeks, December 5th, 2001 Visualization Lab Open to Faculty On November 15, the NUIT Visualization Lab (vislab) in 2East was officially opened. Mort Rahimi, Provost Dumas and Bob Taylor presented some brief comments and then the group of deans and invited faculty moved into the vislab itself for a tour and demonstrations of the visualization hardware and software systems. Doug Roberts, Jim Lindsay and Fred Arnold from the Research Technology Group of AT lead the demonstrations of some interesting research software as well as a fun helicopter flight simulator. Mike Cruz was on hand to show off his 3D VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) viewer written in Java3D. Intan Hashim finished off a new website for the vislab that includes resources for people use the rather complex hardware sand software in the lab. The opening was
a great success, thanks to everyone's efforts. The vislab has four desktop
stereoscopic systems (two Sun workstations and two Dell PCs); the output
of any computer can be routed to a large stereo projection wall for
immersive or group projects. The lab is in room 2650 and is open officially
10 am - 5 pm Monday to Friday, although you will probably find someone
around later than that. In addition to the innovative graphics hardware
systems, we are developing software for a few projects. Periodically,
there are openings for student cons who are interested in 3D software
development; stop by if you are want to see what we are doing. Also,
starting the winter quarter, the vislab will be coordinating a monthly
series of seminars revolving around visualization. |
