Full-Text through NUcat: The Historical Perspective

Until about 200 years ago, it was by no means certain that any given library a student or scholar might consult would have a library catalog. Much like the Linnean classification of plant and animal species, books were arranged taxonomically (by subject) on library shelves and it was presumed that there was a natural place for each book that an expert would know. Scholars entering a library expected to go straight to where a book should be and find it. If it wasn't at the predicted location on the shelf, then tapping into the memoria localis of the librarian would almost inevitably suffice to retrieve it. Long debates might then ensue as to where the book truly belonged. Did that book on dueling truly belong with the corpus juris, or was it really about customs and mores?
