Recent copyright and intellectual property news
Many academic faculty and staff are aware of, or have
at least heard rumors of, the changes wrought upon United States Copyright
Law by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998. The Safe
Harbor clause of the DMCA has helped to clarify limitations on Internet
Service Providers' liability for infringing users, but much of the rest
of the new law is couched in such language that there is a high likelihood
legitimate users will be discouraged from exercising their fair use
and other rights for fear of criminal prosecution.
