Welcome to the monthly eNewsletter from one of Northwestern's experts in resource, instruction and research issues that impact faculty.

All about MPEG
MPEG is a term generally used to refer to a family of digital audio and video technologies. However, there are significant differences between MPEG-1 and the latest MPEG standards under development, including the soon-to-be-released MPEG-7 and MPEG-21, whose committee met for the first time in mid-2000.

NU Professor To Pilot Fully Online Course
Rebecca Wurtz, an associate professor in the Department of Preventative Medicine is piloting a fully online Public Health Infomatics course to demonstrate the use of distance teaching methods to faculty in the Masters of Public Health (MPH) program. The twelve students in the pilot public health course will be MPH faculty themselves. They will provide anonymous feedback that will help determine whether the course will be offered to NU students pursuing their MD/MPH. The final determination to offer the class will be made based on faculty agreement that the online format is an effective teaching format, that the content is appropriate and that the subject area is important for MD/MPH students.

SourceOECD: An Online Library for Economic and Social Issues
Librarians on 2 East have been joining forces with the Government Publications and Maps Department, and the Reference Department, to purchase electronic resources in the field of economics. In past newsletters, we introduced the readership to two such products: Statistical Universe, and the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). In this brief article, we describe yet another important electronic resource, SourceOECD, which is the name given to the family of full-text electronic books, periodicals, and statistical databases published by the The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
